As a professional freelance classical flautist, I see no end of musicians with muscular aches, sprains and pains.
I myself suffered with tennis and golfer's elbow some years ago. In consequence I went for various types of treatment, none of which had any lasting affect. This was until I went for acupressure treatment with Dragomir Lubomirov. In the run up to my acupressure session, I had been practising / playing for many hours a day. It was not my principal instrument (flute) that caused the problem, but tensions in my arms and shoulders that I was not aware of whilst playing the piano. I was busy doing concerts, flute entrance exams to music college and everyday practice and was frustrated by continually hearing physiotherapists and practitioners telling me "Oh well you might have to stop playing for a while" or "This might be a problem for you for the rest of your life"! I felt that they were not looking at my situation from the perspective of a serious musician. "Stopping playing" was not an option!!
I wanted to find a way of sustaining my playing whilst finding out what was at the root of my arm problems. Through talking to Dragomir Lubomirov (acupressurist), my Alexander Technique teacher and addressing the way in which I approached my practice, I gradually began to realise what I had been doing that caused unnecessary tensions in my body.
Following my acupressure treatment with Dragomir, I noticed a huge improvement in my arms and went back for one more acupressure session. Within no time, my problems had gone despite varying treatments from other practioners, none of which had had any lasting affect. I was so interested and impressed by my acupressure treatment that a few years later I decided to researh in to it. I discovered that Dragomir taught acupressure massage amongst a whole host of other things at the College of Chinese Medicine in London. I later studied Advanced Diploma in Acupressure with a view to specifically treating musicians and qualified as an acupressure massage therapist MAcSAp.
